Mark, some weeks I work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every bone in my body is tired. While I respect the notion, and the concept of manual labor, I resent the use of "real" next to work.
- Duncan Riley
[3hr 53min ago]
What I do every day is VERY real. That some people maintain a 19th century notion of what that is, to me is offensive. We live in the information age, and those working in it do real work as well

I'll bite. Work is work. Putting your full attention and efforts into accomplishing a task. There's varying degrees of workers. For every hard working journalist, programmer, program manager, there's a lazy roofer, crab fisherman, and lumberjack. Vice versa ftw. Hard work is working hard whether it be mental concentration on analytical tasks or mental focus while performing physical exertion. Work is work. Workers vary. There's lazy, and then there's hard workers. That'll be $40 please.

Writing is one of the most stressful jobs ever - especially if you are high profile. A certain person in my life works 7 days a week, around the clock, always checking his reader, phone always by him, in case of a breaking story. The guy is stressed - a lot. Please don't underappreciate yourself or your colleagues. Though I certainly may not always agree with you or anyone else in your industry, I most definitely respect your hardwork. Especially those whose paychecks are dependent on the leaderboards.

[2hr 53min ago]
@bwana, @mona: well said. we're comparing apples to oranges. technological advances in our culture have created opportunities for more and more people to get away from physically backbreaking labor, but that doesn't mean that what they do for a wage isn't hard work. but when it's cold outside and i'm walking by a construction site and see guys with their hard hats pounding away, it's hard for me to think of my job, in a modern, climate controlled office, spending my time interacting with people, as "work."

Sounds like one of those guys that read a book mentioning that FF can drive traffic to your site, so he joined and added all his gazillion ad filled "niche splogs". Kind of like the people that share every post they make on twitter, GR, digg, facebook, and everywhere else and has nobody subscribed to them, thinking the more they do it the more links they have and the higher their PR will be and more traffic google will send them. Common "get rich on the internet" crap that is being sold to lots of people. Crap SEO info written by people that know nothing but how to get desperate fools to part with their cash to buy their book.
- April Russo
[2hr 55min ago]
I wonder if you may be right, April. I see top results in Google all the time of sites that have been submitted to Digg with only one or two diggs. The mere linking of those sites on Digg has made them a top result. Some could hope Friendfeed turns out the same way.

@JesseStay How many apps send out automated DMs for users? Just now noticed that twitter took away the DM source. It used to say IM, txt, or web
- Christian Burns

There are quite a number, actually. Ours is one of the largest, but there are a few other large apps as well. Just block them using our service and you'll notice you still get auto dms. The remainder come from other services, and with this source I could turn those off as well. But most importantly my users could tell me if my app for any reason had been hacked.

identi.ca is almost completely equal to twitter in terms of features. and it's opensource, so if you have the technical chops you could setup you're own identi.ca server. both of them use jquery for their interface, thought twitter's implementation is just a little slicker, for now. and identi.ca can post to twitter. what identi.ca doesn't have is a huge user base, and very little brand recognition outside of a very savvy community of technophiles and hackers...but it's still the first quarter of this game.
