"Gym memberships are something of a luxury these days. But without the usual suspects -- treadmills, elliptical trainers, cable machines and free weights -- is it easy to get a decent workout? Absolutely. Just take your workout to the streets -- or the beach or the hiking trail. Southern California is a gym unto itself, with countless outdoor opportunities to exercise that don't cost a penny. Hiking trails -- in Griffith Park, the Santa Monica Mountains and Runyon Canyon, for starters -- with their hills and uneven terrain, are perfect places to practice interval training and improve cardiovascular endurance, as well as strengthen core and leg muscles. Miles of beach, glittering from San Diego to beyond Santa Barbara, are a fitness boon. Muscles must work harder when feet dig into sand, ramping up the difficulty of even the easiest workouts." - Anna Haro annaharo - via Bookmarklet [1d 10hr ago]

And LA is perfect for any activity. Most of our parks have stuff you'll need for muscle toning, there are tons of hike, bike and running paths, free tennis, basketball and volleyball courts abound. Lawn bowling, cricket, soccer and baseball fields are all over and so many of them are underused. The article focuses on the most popular locations, but the places we go are so relaxing because they're so empty. - Anika Malone faboomama [1d 10hr ago]

Walking, cycling etc. are all very good exercises - of course the lousier the weather the less attractive they are. But a gym ball and a set of weights in your house are also plenty to get exercise. Get a dog too, although that costs about the same as a gym membership, possibly. - Joelle Nebbe iphigenie [1d 10hr ago]

The thing about outdoor exercise is that you aren't just doing one thing at a time. You are exercising *and* enjoying nature *and* looking at the pretty girls *and* going somewhere. Whereas if you are at the gym, you are a gerbil in a wheel. - Wirehead wirehead [1d 9hr ago]

Anika - that's really pragmatic and clever. I dont think there is a fitness channel on TV out here, but there are plenty of website-based videos. - Joelle Nebbe iphigenie [13hr 7min ago]

Here's the link to Exercise TV (what I use regularly OnDemand): http://www.exercisetv.tv/... and then FitTV is very helpful and fun too:http://fittv.discovery.com/convergence/virtualvideotraining/virtualvideotraining.html. Both actually help me so that when I go to the gym I'm not flailing about in a class (except for Step). - Anika Malone faboomama [13hr 1min ago]

sounds a bit like a paraphrase: "Sell what you have and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves moneybags that never wear out. Make sure your treasure is safe in heaven, where thieves cannot steal it and moths cannot destroy it." -- Luke 12:33 - Karim yesthatkarim [1d 1hr ago]

"Just as you will struggle over which new devices to buy and use—iPhone or BlackBerry Storm?—media companies will struggle with how to create and pay for content in a world changing so quickly that no one knows how to get it paid for. At the same time the large media companies will be watching as customers change their consumption habits, advertising revenues drop, and creative talent goes in a hundred directions. If this was football, it would be like changing the field, the ball, the number of players and the rules at the same time. Maybe we could even throw in a BCS Playoff system to decide who wins." - Anna Haro annaharo - via Bookmarklet [1d 10hr ago]

"Chances are you've seen a blind person accompanied by a guide dog. But what about a guide horse, a service parrot or a monkey trained to help an agoraphobic? These are just a few of the nontraditional service animals that are used across the country to help people with disabilities and psychological disorders. As their uses are expanding, however, the government is considering a proposal that would limit the definition of "service animal" to "a dog or other common domestic animal." - Anna Haro annaharo - via Bookmarklet [1d 9hr ago]

What government agency is responsible for defining "service animal"? I'm gonna just blame Bush Inc anyway but i'd like some validity when fabricating my justification. - ·[▪_▪]· nicerobot [1d 9hr ago]
